Periodontics and Dental Hygiene Education

The Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene trains future dentists and dental hygienists to prevent disease, treat complex periodontal and peri-implant conditions, and integrate oral health into patient-centered care. Instruction is hands-on and team-based, with a strong foundation in biomedical science, critical thinking, ethics, communication, and professionalism.

Predoctoral Education (DDS)

Dental students gain a thorough understanding of periodontal health, disease, and regeneration through didactic coursework, simulation, and supervised patient care. Training emphasizes risk assessment, prevention, nonsurgical and surgical therapy planning, maintenance, and peri-implant condition management. Interprofessional experiences and case-based seminars strengthen clinical judgment and prepare graduates to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

Advanced Education Program in Periodontics (MS)

The three-year graduate program leads to a Master of Science degree and provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis and management of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. Residents gain expertise in periodontal plastic procedures, regenerative therapies, and implant planning and maintenance. Each resident completes a mentored research project and thesis, presents at regional and national meetings, and contributes to peer-reviewed literature. Graduates are prepared for board certification and lifelong learning.

Preceptorships in Periodontics

Six-month and one-year preceptorships provide focused, individualized learning for dentists seeking advanced training in periodontics and implant dentistry. Participants engage in seminars, observation, and selected hands-on experiences per program guidelines.

Dental Hygiene Programs

The department offers a fully accredited, two-year Dental Hygiene Program, leading to a post-degree certificate or Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene — the only program in the Houston area to offer this degree. Licensed dental hygienists with a bachelor’s degree in any discipline may pursue an online Master of Science in Dental Hygiene. Programs emphasize prevention, patient education, critical thinking, and collaboration with the broader dental team.
